Google's High-Speed Web Plans Hit a Snag

Google parent, Alphabet Inc. is rethinking its high-speed internet business after the initial rollouts proved time consuming and expensive. In this case the costs outweighed the benefits and thus they are asking cities or power companies to build the networks instead of building their own. Also they are thinking of using wireless connections instead of cables for a dozen metro areas. Alphabet has also invested in Google Fiber which is currently building fiber networks across cities.

Alphabet Inc. has acted in self interest by asking Google Fiber and other power companies to build networks instead of building their own as the cost or in this case, the cost and time-taken is outweighing the benefits. As such they have also thought of using wireless connections instead of cables for certain metro areas. On the other hand by investing in Google Fiber they have also helped their own cause, a high-speed internet which is in the social interest as many people tend to use internet and always require more speed.

Economics studies the choices that people make. These choices are heavily influenced by scarcity and incentives. People use rational decision making to choose based on their common sense and personal preferences.

Economists use the assumption of rational behavior to observe why they make the choices they do. This allows them a view into common sense and general preferences. Also it would take into consideration of the data or the information that led the person in question to make this choice. To study the choices that people make, one must know the facts they knew and understand common sense. If added together; the facts and common sense will lead to a rational decision that the person has made or would make. 

But there are times when people would choose irrationally but that can be avoided if given incentive (a reward or penalty). Self-control is necessary to choose wisely and in our self-interest at times.
